Hydrofracturing

Hydrofracturing in New Hampshire and Maine

Hydrofracturing, originally developed for the oil and gas industry, is a well development process that involves injecting water under high pressure into a bedrock formation (ledge) via the well. This is done to increase the size and extent of existing bedrock fractures, and to increase well yields of drilled wells with minimal or insufficient flow rates.

Hydrofracturing is an affordable, restorative well water technique to open new and existing fractures in a well. We first remove all piping and the pump from the well, followed by lowering one or two inflatable balloons into the well, called packers. Once the packers are in the well, we’ll inflate them to seal off part of the well. We then pump high-pressure water through the packers in order to see a sudden drop in pressure and an increased flow of water into the well. A hydrofracture is successful only if the pressure drops.

Our Success Rate

During the past year, Atlantic Water Solutions hydrofractured approximately 13% of the wells we drilled in Maine and New Hampshire at a 95% success rate. Some situations warrant the use of much larger hydrofracturing equipment that will produce greater pressures. Atlantic Water Solutions retains the services of a regional specialist to assist with these situations. We will consult with you prior to employing outside services. Contact us today to learn more about our hydrofracturing service.
