Pressure tanks: the part that protects your pump

The pressure tank is the buffer between your pump and your plumbing. It holds a volume of water against an air cushion so the pump can rest between cycles. When the tank fails, the pump starts and stops constantly, pressure swings, and the pump wears out far ahead of its time.

Tanks fail in two common ways. The bladder or diaphragm inside ruptures, leaving the tank waterlogged, or the air precharge is simply wrong. A quick check of precharge with the water off tells us which, and a precharge adjustment sometimes saves a tank. When it does not, we replace it with a correctly sized unit, often larger than the one before it.

Tank size, switch settings and the pump's capacity should agree. We set them as a set rather than one at a time.

How do I know if my tank is waterlogged?
Tap it. A healthy tank sounds hollow at the top and solid at the bottom. A uniformly dull sound or water at the air valve means trouble.
Can I raise my water pressure?
Within limits. Switch settings and tank precharge change it, but your pump, pipes and fixtures have ratings that matter.
Should the tank be bigger?
A larger tank means longer rests for the pump. We size it with the pump and demand in mind.
