Remove the hardness minerals that scale pipes, heaters and fixtures.
Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium. You see it as white crust on faucets, cloudy glassware, a film in the shower and a water heater that scales up and loses efficiency. A softener swaps those minerals for sodium or potassium as water passes through a bed of resin, and then flushes itself clean with brine on a schedule.
A softener that is too small regenerates constantly and wastes salt. One that is too big can leave resin sitting idle. We measure hardness, and iron if it is present, then size the unit to the household's daily use. Iron matters here: heavy iron fouls resin, so a separate iron filter ahead of the softener is often the right answer.
Salt does not have to be a chore. We deliver bags and fill the brine tank so nobody has to haul forty pounds down the cellar stairs.
