Water Treatment for Iron and Manganese

Iron and manganese may occur naturally in concentrations greater than the recommended limits for drinking water. In most places, excessive amounts of iron and manganese may restrict usefulness of the water by giving it a metallic taste and/or by discoloring bathroom fixtures, laundry, etc. These are generally considered to be a nuisance rather than a threat to your health.

Rest assured, however; water treatment systems exist for removing these minerals. Iron may cause yellow or rusty stains in sinks, toilet bowls, and on clothing. Manganese produces dark brown or black stains. Fabrics washed in manganese-bearing water are almost invariably stained. Deposits that collect in plumbing will often contain black sediment and turbidity.
