Sulfur Removal Systems

What’s That Smell? It Could Be Sulfur in Your Water

It tastes like rotten eggs and smells like rotten eggs. What is it? It could be sulfur in your water. Hydrogen gas originates from the decomposition of natural organic matter. Quantities can fluctuate dramatically depending on atmospheric pressure or water table height. Though sulfur is generally not considered harmful it’s mainly considered a nuisance — especially because the taste and odor are so unpleasant, preventing people from drinking it altogether or in large amounts. It can also be damaging to metals including iron, steel, copper, and brass. It can even cause unsightly yellow or black stains on your kitchen or bathroom fixtures.

How Does Sulfur Get Into Your Drinking Water?

Sulfates are a form of sulfur and sulfates enter your water through the earth. As groundwater and rainwater seep through the earth’s surface, they dissolve the oxidized sulfide ores and other sulfur-containing minerals and carry the sulfur into your home’s well, or water source. Additional ways sulfur can make its way into your water include:

  • Sulfate-reducing bacteria convert compounds into hydrogen sulfide gas
  • There’s something decaying inside your water
  • Your water heater produces the gas
  • Chemical reactions between sulfur and minerals present in rocks and in soil

While you
can drink sulfur water, there are several reasons you will want to have it removed from your drinking water. Too many sulfates in your water will not cause health issues as the levels are not too high, but it can cause other problems such as the following:

  • Diarrhea and dehydration
  • Bitter-tasting water due to scale deposits in pipes
  • Make your water have a rotten egg smell
  • Can shorten the lifespan of pipes and affect a home’s plumbing system
  • May cause yellow or black stains on fixtures in the bathroom or kitchen
  • Can lead to slime that clogs pipes or stains clothing
  • Can create a black tarnish on silverware and stain copper or brass utensils
